Doris’s movie Tea for Two was a Technicolor remake of the 1925 Broadway musical No No Nanette. Most of the songs remain intact from the original score and those included on this adorable album seem very much at home here on Doris’s 2nd LP for Columbia. The actual recording sessions for this album took place on the 14 & 25 July 1950. Although these sessions were split between conductors Page Cavanaugh and Alex Stordahl it did not harm the album’s overall continuity. In fact, it worked to widen its appeal with both musical maestros delivering two of my favourite Day recordings: “I Want To Be Happy” (Cavanaugh) and “I Only Have Eyes For You” (Stordahl). I should just explain that it was contractual restrictions imposed on Doris by Columbia Records which prevented her from recording with many of her movie co-stars as they often were signed to rival record labels. Thus, she was unable to record this movie’s duets with Gordon MacRae. The good news is this cloud does have a silver lining as many of Doris’s co-stars now feature on a new series of British CDs featuring episodes from Doris’s 1950s American radio series The Doris Day Show. At the time of writing this review there is currently a volume one & volume two.
