Sony BMG’s “The Magic of Doris Day” CD is a Top 20 British best-seller
May 16, 2007 1 CommentOn 29 January 2007, SonyBMG – UK released their new CD celebrating Doris Day’s “evergreen” legacy of song.
Backed by a major TV-advertising campaign the CD on its first week of release charted at #20 on the UK album charts. It is hoped that this success will spark yet another renaissance like that of the 1990s when Ms. Day last rode high in the British ‘Top 20′.
‘The Magic of Doris Day’ is a cutely packaged collection although unusually does not feature any photographs of the songstress which we do feel is a slight let down. It does however feature a nicely balanced combination of international hit singles and essential album recordings from the vaults at Columbia Records. The real bonus for fans are the inclusion of two songs that make their debut on CD format. These gems were recorded after Doris had departed from her long-time label and embarked on a very successful ‘sitcom’ career on American television. Included is a medley that in part featured on her first TV special and Ms. Day’s heartfelt rendition of Streisand’s “The Way We Were” which she taped live during her second and last American TV special.
If the CD wasn’t exciting enough Sony BMG – UK release one week later ‘The Doris Day Special’. This is a Region 2 DVD edition of Doris’s 1971-aired TV special featuring Perry Como and Rock Hudson (released Stateside in 2006). The DVD will be available in a limited edition digipak case and also a standard plastic amaray case.
STOP PRESS: Sony BMG – Australia released the CD & DVD on the 14 April 2007. The CD peaked in mid-May on the Australian charts at #22 during a Mother’s Day promotion!
