Sony Music Australia release a new 3CD Doris Day set “Hits, Hollywood & Broadway”
April 15, 2010 No CommentsIn April 2010, Sony BMG Australia released a new budget Doris Day CD set of music which she originally recorded and released for the Columbia label.
The set which we are now in possession of is entitled “Hits, Hollywood & Broadway”. The 3-discs come in a standard slimline case (usually associated with a single CD album) and contains a basic booklet with track listing and a short biography about the star.
The pluses for this release are that it is a compilation which is exclusive to Australia and one of the first major Doris Day music release downunder for some years. We also think that the decision to press picture disc CDs was quite charming as each CD features a pretty fifties shot of Doris from the movie “Love Me or Leave Me”. The 68 track set offers any newbie fan a nice assortment of material which will give them a good introduction into what ‘Doris Day – The Singer’ is all about.
The downsides in our opinion are the booklet does not contain any photographs; the innovative style “slimline” case proved fragile and lasted 5 minutes before the teeth that hold the CDs in place broke apart; the set on import outside of Australia is rather overpriced for what it offers; the three themed CDs don’t contain anything which we haven’t already seen before: CD1 is almost a copycat of the best-selling British compilation “The Hit Singles Collection”; CD2 offers recordings from Doris’s 1958 double studio album “Hooray for Hollywood”; CD3 is an assortment of songs taken from some of her finest studio albums “Cuttin’ Capers”, “What Every Girl Should Know”, “Show Time” and “Bright & Shiny” (released between 1959 to 1961). We commend Sony Music Australia for commemorating Doris Day’s birthday but wish they had tried to be a wee bit more creative.
