The Doris Day Special

Doris Day’s career covered many facets and having conquered Hollywood as Warner Brothers musical favourite in the late 40’s and throughout the 50’s she then became the doyen of sophisticated comedy in a box-office run of successful Universal movies during the 60’s. Throughout it all, Doris recorded hit singles and superior albums until 1967 when personal events dictated she move into television for what became a popular five-year sitcom run.

Having developed and established the weekly format of THE DORIS DAY SHOW, Doris was offered her own television music “Special” and recorded over the Summer of 1970, the Show was aired in the USA by CBS on 14th March 1971 to the delight of her fans. With its focus almost entirely song-based, the introductory middle section release of SECRET LOVE (“Now I shout it from the highest hills…….”) gives way to some contemporary numbers crammed into a pleasing medley with WHO WILL BUY? (from OLIVER), the Simon and Garfunkel hit FEELING GROOVY plus The Beatles’ OBLA DI, OBLA DA amongst them and Doris clearly enjoys singing them as part of the opening bicycle sequence. Special guest Perry Como quantifies their ideally laid-back on-screen visual chemistry for a vocally shared medley of humour and old fashioned numbers, WHEN YOU WERE SWEET SIXTEEN and LET ME CALL YOU SWEETHEART combined with the more recent EVERYBODY LOVES A LOVER, MEDITATION and YOU DON'T WANT MY LOVE, leaving Perry his solo spot on DIDN’T WE? Doris’ other solo songs are HURRY, IT’S LOVELY UP HERE, BOTH SIDES NOW, THE GYPSY IN MY SOUL and THEM WAS THE GOOD OLD DAYS plus a closing reworking of IT’S MAGIC and SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY which clearly demonstrate how great her vocal talent was at the time.

This above-average colourful show features some funky fashions, expansive sets and a song (YOU MUST HAVE BEEN A BEAUTIFUL BABY) with some of Doris’ dogs plus a brief fun walk-on by Rock Hudson. Thanks to the natural Day ability to be herself, the Show succeeds brilliantly with extended bonus never-before-outtakes and deleted scenes adding kudos to her persona. Never shown in the UK, it may have taken 35 years for THE DORIS MARY ANNE KAPPELHOFF SPECIAL to reach DVD but the wait was well worth it! Go buy!
