It was in the early 1950s that record executives began the idea of establishing their most prominent stars as album recording artists. That change of approach sparked the birth of the concept album, which would contain themed material that had lasting impact.

This would be Doris’s first long play release to follow that lead. Doris started recording for this project on the 17 September 1956. Paul Weston arranged and conducted the sessions that took only three separate days to complete. This was not the first time that Doris had worked with Weston. The partnership between the singer and musician had begun in April 1951. This was when Weston produced, On Moonlight Bay, a spin-off album to her musical movie of the same name. Weston’s production credits would then appear on the majority of Doris’s releases until he left Columbia Records in 1957.

The album Day by Day became one of Doris's most successful LPs from this period of her career. Highlights include “I Remember You”, the evergreen “Autumn Leaves” and a reprise of “Day by Day” which Doris had first recorded with Les Brown in the 1940s (around the time that Weston had co-written it).
