16 Oct-19 Nov 1957 (7 days)
Doris began recording for the Hooray
for Hollywood project in October 1957. These sessions followed
less than two months after she had completed
Day by Night, which was
her final album with conductor Paul Weston. The man to fill Weston’s
shoes would be Frank DeVol, who had first worked with Doris on a
series of single releases in 1954. DeVol was also the man behind
Doris’s million-seller, “Que Sera, Sera”.
Hooray for Hollywood was an
adventurous project as it bucked the trend of being limited to just
a single LP. There were instead enough songs to fill lavishly a
double LP set; these later were split into two separate volumes.
Both LPs contained an array of timeless standards that Doris had
chosen from Hollywood's vintage era of the big-budget musical movie.
The song writing credits included many of America’s greatest
composers like Porter, Berlin, Styne and Gershwin.
The spine-tingling interpretations
that feature are the jewels in the DeVol/Day crown with the lush,
emotive string arrangements of “In the Still of the Night”,
“Night
and Day” and “Three Coins in the Fountain” penetrating even the
sternest of hearts. |
