Tea for Two is loosely based on the Broadway hit No, No Nanette retaining some of the better songs from the score which included the delightful title tune. The story tells of a young heiress Nanette Carter who bets her uncle $25K that she can say “No” to everything for 48 hours. If Nanette succeeds she can help her songwriter-boyfriend by financing his Broadway show which she’d then star in. Unbeknown to Nanette her uncle cannot give her the money because he suffered badly from the Stock Market crash of October, 1929. This movie may not be everyone’s cup of tea (excuse the pun) but as with many of Doris’s early musicals it offers total escapism featuring some great standards like Crazy Rhythm and I Only Have Eyes For You.
