Bright and Shiny was recorded between the 19-23 December 1960 and was Doris’s last project for the year. It is a cheery, up-tempo album that is themed on songs that all offer a very optimistic point of view. Thus, it is no surprise that arrangements are given a really sugar-coated feel (with emphasise on the sugar-sweet). Both the title song and “Twinkle and Shine” were written specially for this project and are the epitome of the theme. Although some of the recordings now feel quite dated these are balanced by some ones that are very memorable! Definate highlights are Gene Kelly’s hit “Singin’ in the Rain”, “Happy Talk” from South Pacific and the 1930s tune “On the Sunny Side of the Street”. Doris’s favourite tune on the album, “Make Someone Happy” was disappointedly replaced for the UK pressing of the album by “Anyway the Wind Blows”. This album was also notably conducted by Neal Hefti who, during the 1960s, established himself as one Sinatra’s foremost collaborators!
