Eric Braun’s best-selling British Doris Day biography revised for 2004 and featuring rare photos by Hollywood photographer Leo Fuchs

April 1, 2004 2 Comments

In the year of Doris’s 80th birthday Orion Publishing print the 2004 edition of their “warm and authoritative” biography by British writer, Eric Braun.

First published in 1991, ‘Doris Day’ tells of the star’s childhood, her fame both as a singer and actress, the near-fatal car crash that put paid to her budding career as a dancer, her four marriages and the passionate campaigns for animal welfare that now dominate her life.

The 2004 edition, which the webmaster of this site helped prepare additional content for now benefits from a new prologue, extended film/music/award/television listings, as well as a series of previously unpublished photo material taken during the 1960s by legendary Hollywood photographer Leo Fuchs (see samples above).

The book is not written to shock or upset as it pretty much sticks to a very “safe” path of re-telling what more ardent fans will already know about Ms. Day and what she already discussed in her own authorised 1970s book. The writer at times reflects on his childhood as he looks back on Ms Day’s career which some may object to but all in all we think the book offers a super-value read especially with all the great new content!

“Doris Day” by Eric Braun is available now from the UK, USA and Australia (distributed by Allen & Unwin).  Our overwhelming message has to be that in the absence of Doris’s official autobiography, ‘Her Own Story’, this paperback makes for a nice substitute read for anyone who admires dear Doris!

STOP PRESS July 2005: We have just been informed by the publisher that the 2004 edition has just gone into its 3rd reprint which just goes to show it is as ever popular today as it was when it first came out in 1991!
