RARE 1970s recordings feature on the first US release of Doris’s “LOST” album

Doris Day’s 28th original album receives its first ever release in the United States of America.

It would take something very special to lure Doris Day back into the recording studio after she parted company with her long-time label Columbia Records.  That “something” would be an album themed around some of her all-time favourite ballads which she handpicked especially for the new project.

Ms. Day attended recording sessions for her new album between May 25 and June 9 in 1967. Her vocals were combined with a dreamy backdrop of lush orchestration that came courtesy of conductor Sidney H. Feller and producer Don Genson (Genson later worked on Doris’s TV sitcom as an executive producer).

Although the project was intended for release at the time this was not to be. Instead it was completely forgotten after some pretty dramatic events in Ms Day’s private life which included the death of her husband Marty Melcher and a subsequent court case that prevailed when it was discovered her fortunes had been lost by a crooked attorney. ‘The Love Album’ simply became the “Lost” album and vanished into obscurity!

In the summer of 1993, Doris Day’s son Terry Melcher suddenly came across the album’s original master tapes. The following year, ‘The Love Album’ made its debut in the United Kingdom and soon after in Australia. The release was backed by a high profile promotional campaign with Ms. Day giving two unprecedented television interviews exclusively to the British media.

“They’re songs that I really loved and I adored singing them and I am really very excited about it…it’s fun!” – Doris Day (1994)

2006 heralds the first North American release for Doris Day’s penultimate studio album. Only a series of 1980s recording remain unreleased. The re-issue made by the Concord Music Group aptly coincides with Valentines Day and boasts new packaging, informative liner notes and three never-before-released recordings made for Doris Day’s 1971 aired TV special.
