Doris Day’s right to privacy – Aren’t some things better left unsaid?
May 25, 2008 No CommentsAfter being out of the spotlight for over thirty years has Doris Day earned the right to some privacy?
Over the last 12 months, this site has delivered you the news about three new books. Each proclaim they are to give a previously untold insight into the life of Doris Day. Pausing for just a moment though one does have to ask if we really do need such revelations. Well my opinion, for what it is worth, is I actually can’t see the merit of going over old ground about old things which may or may not have happened. Do you see my point?
One of the main reasons why I think these books have so strongly divided Doris Day’s fan base is the majority were actually drawn to Doris Day for all the positive things she represents. We all know Ms. Day is extremely talented but also very modest, she’s a genuinely nice lady, she wasn’t a tyrant to work with, she’s respectful towards her fellow man and god’s creatures and she’s sustained a very loyal and protective fan base by keeping in touch with her supporters long after bowing out from Hollywood.
No one professes Doris Day is a goody-two-shoes as her official biography confirms her life was not a peach. What you can say is Doris Day has always conducted herself with dignity which would actually put a lot of today’s “wanna-be celebrities” to shame. This is not a lady who made her name through selling her soul to the press but a decent human being who let her talent do the talking. A lady who, in the 1970s, published with A.E. Hotchner an honest account of her life and since then has lived a very ordinary existence surrounded by the people and four legged friends that she adores. What more is there left to tell which can truly be relied upon when so many of the people closest to Ms. Day are no longer with us.
My feeling is if you want to read any of these books you probably will. So, it serves no purpose me telling you not. It is just that I personally don’t want to invest any more time talking about any book which could cause offence. Thus, I have dropped any coverage about these “questionable” books.
My advice is if you have a few bucks to spare you are better placed making a donation to one of Doris Day’s animal welfare organisations or buy one of her many DVDs or CDs which you will find detailed at our amazon aStore.
