The Vienna-born photographer began his career as a freelance magazine photographer. He later found himself being granted rare access onto movie sets where he captured candid shots of some of the most elite stars of the Hollywood set which included Ms. Day, who he photographed for a number of her movie publicity shots and Columbia single and album releases. With the support of his showbiz friend Cary Grant, Fuchs eventually gave up photography to then spend 20 years as a motion picture producer.
Fuchs’ “King of the Coffee Table Books” offers a valuable piece of history and a reference for the style and personalities of the glamorous world of post-war Hollywood. Contained within are many behind-the-scenes photographs of 1950s and ’60s film icons, including Doris Day, Rock Hudson, Audrey Hepburn, Paul Newman, Gregory Peck, Sean Connery, Shirley MacLaine, Frank Sinatra, Marlon Brando, Cary Grant, and never-before-published photographs of To Kill a Mockingbird’s Harper Lee as well as such legendary directors as Billy Wilder, Otto Preminger, Fred Zinnemann, and Alfred Hitchcock.
Fans may recall that Fuchs’ provided a series of truly stunning photographs of Ms. Day for the 2004 re-issue of the late author Eric Braun’s book “Doris Day“.
