Simone Kleinsma sings Doris Day: A delightful one woman show from Holland’s award-winning “Queen of Musical Theatre”

August 7, 2011 2 Comments

Over the last few years, many of you have written in telling us just how swept away you have been by a Doris Day tribute show you had watched by a songstress and all round entertainment star of the Netherlands. The star we refer to is Simone Kleinsma who, in 2004, released her CD+DVD set entitled “Simone sings Doris (The Doris Day Songbook)” which contains a concert filmed at the Fabriek Theatre in Amsterdam.

We must admit that both Simone’s concert tour and CD/DVD set of the same name completely and utterly slipped by our radar. Also since being alerted to the set we have struggled to track it down. The main reason for this we understand is the set was purely marketed to music lovers inside the Netherlands. As a consequence of this it was never made available on amazon or even iTunes. No matter…our waiting has finally paid off as we finally took delivery this week of the “elusive” concert set.

Now we accept that many of you may also experience the same stumbling blocks when it comes to trying to order it [tip: try eBay.com or BOL.com] but you know something, we just wanted to introduce this very talented lady to you all.  Simone for those who didn’t know (and we admit we fell into that category!) is an award-winning musical theatre actress of the Netherlands, whose career began in the late 1970s. She has starred in Dutch productions of many hit musicals such as ‘Sweeney Todd’, ‘Mamma Mia!’, ‘Chicago’ and ‘Sunset Boulevard’ playing some of the most iconic leading roles of the theatre world. I guess we’d describe Simone as the Dutch equivalent to Elaine Paige and like Elaine she is also very much respected and revered in her home country.

Back to the set. My oh my “Simone sings Doris” is indeed impressive. The packaging as you will see in the photograph below boasts quite an innovative concept of Simone holding up a cut out mask of her idol and indeed for the concert she adopts the persona of Doris Day delivering a truly uplifting night of “fun” sing-a-long favourites. Also judging by the amount of audience participation throughout the hour long show it seems that Simone’s onlookers genuinely enjoyed the evening as much as she did!

As you can guess, over the last 13 years of running this website, we have seen a lot of “tribute” albums. But you know something this project is actually quite a special one. Firstly, it has been rare for performers outside the USA to take to the road with DD’s songbook (most tribute acts have understandably originated from Ms. Day’s home country). Also this release is a “multimedia set” including not only a CD album of the concert but a jolly nice DVD of the performer live on stage belting out her salute to DD. What impressed us most is from start to finish it is crystal clear that this project was truly a “big budget” affair…we’d describe it as an “EVENT”!  Actually to quantify that statement I don’t think we have ever seen a one woman show salute Ms. Day with such style and grace but Simone did just that!

A lot of thought had so obviously gone into the show’s planning and concept. There are so many small touches and nods to Ms. Day throughout Simone’s performances. Her skills as a musical theatre star are also used to great effect as she clearly understands each lyric, can sing it with great clarity and meaning and ultimately knows how to bring it to life – making for very entertaining renditions of Doris’ songbook. The concert footage is also complimented by a lot of bonus commentary which tells the life story of Ms. Day albeit in Dutch language. Don’t be scared off by that aspect as all the singing of course is in English and any self discerning DD fan will easily fill in the missing pieces on the biographical facts when they see various stills on screen of Ms. Day. Simone is also notably supported by a truly fabulous big band and some very charismatic supporting male singers who each seamlessly compliment her every word and note. The magic of the slickly produced tribute show extends to its CD/DVD release as the design team have done a stellar job of wrapping up the concert in very cute artwork with a lovely booklet containing “sing-a-long” song lyrics and lots of artsy imagery which makes clever use of some classic images of darling DD.

They say in life “Give credit where credit is due!” and that is ultimately why we wanted to place the spotlight on Simone Kleinsma as she is a genuine talent well worth discovering. Simone if you are reading this we do think you need to resurrect this show and bring it to England and the USA as it is definitely an evening which we know many of DD’s fans would just love. We were also wowed by her impressive performance of Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard which you can find on YouTube.

Simone’s most recent project was her musical tour “Songbook”. A live album of the show was released in December 2010 and it features some popular standards and Dutch tunes.
