Warner Bros. USA announces a GENERAL release for their Region 1 DVD of Doris Day’s thriller ‘Julie’

September 4, 2011 3 Comments

In August 2011, we reported that the American-based Warner Bros. Shop was selling a new ‘Region 1’ DVD of Doris Day’s 1956 film ‘Julie‘.  For this release, the movie house had made a special ‘Widescreen’ transfer of the MGM thriller (Warner’s own MGM pictures from this era).

We know the limited availability of this DVD frustrated many avid Doris Day collectors as the Warner shop ONLY shipped to fans living within the USA. The good news is a ‘General’ release for the film on DVD has just been announced for the 30 September 2011. You can therefore now order ‘Julie’ from amazon.com which will ship worldwide.

Coincidentally, we’ve just received the DVD and can say it is great to see the film again in a ‘digital’ format as the last time we saw it was some years ago on an old VHS video tape. We must warn you though it is not as cleaned up as we thought it possibly may be after being told it had been “remastered”. There are still lots of minor flaws showing from the original film negatives but as the story is intense and gripping throughout you will likely find yourself drawn to the dramatic scenes and dialogue opposed to the little blips/imperfections which are all ultimately just a sign of the time. The movie does not come with any bonus features other than the original theatrical trailer and there are no subtitles or alternate language audio (just English!). We’ve included a couple stills below lifted directly from the 2011 DVD release.

‘Julie’ is part of Warner’s “Made to Order” series of films on DVD. Something we must point out about this range is the film is manufactured in small numbers as/when orders arrive. The packaging looks virtually like any regular DVD release but the film is manufacturered onto a different type of DVD disc called a “DVDR”. Be aware that although it is expected to play back in DVD Video “Play Only” devices other DVD devices including Recorders and PC Drives may not be able to play this type of disc. On saying that, we tested the disc in our normal DVD player, our PC’s DVD drive and a standalone DVD recorder – on all devices it played like a dream!

Doris Day’s films ‘Midnight Lace’ and ‘Where Were You When The Lights Went Out’ are the only remaining titles waiting to receive an American DVD release.

  1. Pedro says:

It seems that there is absolutely no subtitles on this film, or at least Amazon does not say. The only language seems to be English.

  2. Stephen says:

You are correct. There are NO subtitles or alternate language audio sound tracks.

  3. christopher says:

I now have this dvd…. but i have 2 say that Warner Bros has really let the release of this wonderful movie down . The quality is not that great ,and is not as stunning as Warner Bros other releases of Doris’ works .
The dvd disc , cover and even the case it comes in . . looks really cheap.
    Wake up Warner Bros.
