Book review of Michael DeVita’s fan tribute – ‘My “Secret Love” affair with Doris Day’

August 17, 2012 1 Comment

Baltimore-based Mike DeVita is probably best known amongst the Doris Day fan community for his internet pod casts which he broadcasts from his website www.sampod4u.com. DeVita has over the last few years regularly compiled tributes on his “favourite lady” including an annual celebration of her April 3rd birthday. Doris Day – who is very much aware of Devita’s efforts – has also returned the favour by recording phone messages for his shows and listeners to enjoy.

The title of Devita’s recently released paperback – published July 2011 – may therefore initially surprise onlookers as it implies yet another “sensationalised” read about the star. The truth of the matter is DeVita’s book is far from controversial or offensive as it is written in a sensitive manner which instead charts his life from boyhood during the 1940s alongside countless details of darling Doris’s career. These facts are interwoven with his personal memories and anecdotes such as his first life-changing meeting with his idol during a performance she gave in Atlantic City with the Les Brown Band. From that moment onwards DeVita became a devoted fan and collector who continues to correspond with Ms. Day into manhood. His book accounts for how his love for Day’s music and films affected him so deeply – something which we are sure many fans out there will relate to!

To reiterate this is not a book of revelations but a warm and genuine account which many will likely enjoy reading. For one thing you finally discover who the man is behind the various Doris Day themed radio shows which have given enjoyment to so many worldwide. As a bonus you also gain from the 319-page read a wealth of information about the whole of Day’s career from a fan’s perspective. We also understand it is DeVita’s intention once “start up costs” have been recouped from sales to donate “better than 50%” of his royalty cheques to the Doris Day Animal Foundation.

The only very small criticism we have is the cover sleeve photograph of Doris lets the book down a little as it has been slightly misshaped. Other than that we wish Mr. DeVita all the best with his project and sincerely hope it helps many needy animals along the way!
