Fox Home Entertainment in the USA are celebrating 75 years of movie-making with their new “Studio Classics” range of QUAD DVD boxsets (released on the 3 August 2010).

Set #15 contains Doris Day and James Garner’s much loved 1963 comedy movie “Move Over, Darling” which was a remake of the 1940s film “My Favourite Wife”. The film opens with the navy rescuing Doris from a deserted island and follows her character as she rushes to reclaim her husband played by James Garner who has just re-married after giving up on a 5-year search for his “missing” former wife. This film is an absolute joy to watch with Doris looking super sexy throughout and sounding very sultry on her ‘million selling’ title tune which was notably banned upon release in the UK by the BBC who labelled it too “provocative”.

Packaged also on this ‘Region 1′ set is the star-studded picture “O’Henry’s Full House” (1952), Danny Kaye’s “On the Riviera” (1951) and Paul Newman and Joan Collin’s “Rally ‘Round the Flag, Boys!” (1959).

Classic Quad Set #15
Label: Fox Entertainment

In 2007, Sony BMG (UK) released this TV-advertised CD with a DVD of Doris’s first televised music special. On its first week of release the CD charted at #20 on the UK album charts (its highest position). The Magic of Doris Day features a nice mixture of international hit singles and essential album recordings from the vaults at Columbia. The real bonus for collectors is the inclusion of two songs that make their CD debut. This includes a song medley that opened Doris’s 1971 special and her heartfelt rendition of Streisand’s “The Way We Were” which she taped live on her final 1975 special. Both gems were recorded after Doris had departed Columbia and embarked on a successful career in television. If there is one criticism of this project that would be the absence of any actual photographs as the packaging relies solely on cartoon drawings. On 14 April 2007, the CD was released in Australia to coincide with a Mother’s Day promotional campaign. It peaked in mid-May at #22 on the Australian charts.

Highest Chart Position: UK#20 / Australia#22

This 3CD set issued to celebrate Doris Day’s 80th birthday has to rate as one of the most unique and memorable releases from the Sony Music group. It was also a project that I had the pleasure to coordinate. Containing three “themed” CDs it features 60 original recordings that have been digitally remastered. The set also provides a beautiful overview of 26 years of hit singles and album recordings (1940-66) as well as including track-rarities, alternate-takes, a full Columbia LP discography, track-by-track notes and a mini biography.

If that was not enough to wet your appetite, specially obtained celebrity anecdotes appear from Burt Bacharach, Michael Feinstein, Robert Goulet, Frankie Laine, Sir Paul McCartney, Johnny Mathis, Anne Murray, Olivia Newton-John, Cybill Shepherd and Andy Williams. The proverbial icing on the “birthday” cake was the contribution of a special message from Doris Day which she wanted her fans to read.

Upon its release this 3CD set received critical acclaim from various disc jockeys on British radio station BBC Radio 1.
This truly is Doris Day’s “…Life in Music”

This CD contains a treasure trove of ‘Doris Day’ A&B side singles which were released by Columbia Records (USA) during the 1960s. This standout project ignores those singles that originate from Doris’s original studio albums and focuses solely on those songs that are unique to the single format. Thus, what you get is an assortment of very colourful recordings that are difficult to obtain on CD (unless of course you splash out on the extravagant Bear Family boxset of this era)!

This super collections closes with two wonderful tunes by hit song-makers Barry Mann and Cynthia Weill, who were responsible for songs like “Saturday Night At The Movies” (The Drifters), “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling” (The Righteous Brothers) and “Make Your Own Kind Of Music” (Mama Cass Elliott). Both of these tracks were intended as potential “pop” singles for Doris but never got released!

Conductor: Various
Label: Collectables Records (USA)

In 2000, this website conducted a poll to discover which of Doris Day’s recorded “love songs” were the most popular with her fans. A Top 20 shortlist was drawn up after over 1500 fans cast their votes. All of these songs were then included on this very special and unique collection. Some of the songs chosen were hits for Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Shirley Bassey, The Mamas and the Papas and Chris Montez. This CD gives any newbie fan a real taste for the styles that Doris embraced throughout her career at Columbia. Also included are rarities like the unreleased single “Moonlight Lover” (based on Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata), the swingy US B-side “Every Now and Then” and the UK B-side “This Too Shall Pass Away”.

This beautifully produced American 2CD set contains some of the most significant singles and best-loved songs most associated with Doris Day. It comes with extensive liner notes and includes 5 previously unreleased songs. All recordings are digitally remastered using 20-bit technology. This set was released in North America, Japan and across Europe. On the downside Doris was rumoured to be disappointed with the choice of cover sleeves and this “golden” opportunity should not have virtually overlooked Doris’s work as an album recording artist!

This was the first music project that Doris undertook after she parted from her long-time label Columbia. What lured the songstress back into the recording studio was the prospect of remaking some of her all-time favourite romantic ballads. Doris completed her vocals in just three days over the 25 May-9 June 1967 but the album then vanished into obscurity!

In the summer of 1993, Doris’s son Terry Melcher made the shock discovery of the “lost” album’s original studio tapes. A year later, these recordings were given their first release by a British record label. This monumental occasion was supported by a high-profile TV advertising campaign. Doris also gave a series of unprecedented television interviews to help promote it.

Although at the time of recording these songs Doris was vocally still in her prime the sedate orchestral arrangements do them a disservice.

In 2006, The Love Album received a long awaited American CD release. This particular edition benefits from the inclusion of three obscure bonus tracks: “Both Sides Now”, “It’s Magic” and “Sentimental Journey”. These songs were produced in April 1970 by Don Genson and Terry Melcher and originally used in Doris’s 1971 TV special.

Producer: Don Genson and Martin Melcher
Label: Vision (UK) / Feinery (USA)
Format: Audio CD (UK #VISCD2) / (USA #FDC3104-2)
Highest UK Chart Position: #63

If I were to say that this collection actually inspired me to launch this website I hope this will convey the effect it had on me. In short this is a superb album of Doris’s hit singles and classic cuts from her finest studio albums – the perfect introduction to the star’s music career! An extensive TV advertising campaign for this album ensured it a comfortable position in the British ‘Top 20′ album chart. This compilation album was later issued in Canada and Australia.
