‘Doris Day – Complete Christmas Collection’ is a 22-track anthology which contains the GRAMMY award-winning singer’s complete “holiday-themed” recordings. It includes material from both the Columbia vaults and Ms. Day’s private collection.

The new compilation is a re-issue of a 2008 release of the same name. The 2012 edition differs slightly as it now features a new cover sleeve – this we feel is a slight let down as the 2008 cover art was so elegant and Christmassy in design.

Just in case you do not recognise the CD’s tracklist (detailed below) the first 12 recordings originate from the star’s delicious 1964 studio album ‘The Doris Day Christmas Album‘. These cheery festive favourites are then followed by 2 hard-to-find tracks D.D. recorded in 1959 with her music producer Frank DeVol and a further 5 non-LP Columbia singles. The icing on the cake to this charming compilation is Ms. Day’s rendition of “Silent Night” from her early-1950s radio show and our absolute personal favourite the divine “Let No Walls Divide” which was recorded for an all-star Christmas album that Columbia Records released in 1961.

We say this every year as it is so true – “the happy holiday season would not be the same without Doris Day singing her heart out!”. So don’t delay order the ‘Complete Christmas Collection’ now from amazon.com & amazon.co.uk.

If you are primarily concerned with obtaining a CD issue which utilises the original cover sleeve artwork of Ms. Day’s 1964 Christmas LP you can find an alternate “budget” release from Sony Music UK at amazon.co.uk, amazon.de and amazon.com.

The ‘With A Smile And A Song’ 2CD set is Sony Music’s first official American release in 13 years and it does not disappoint!

After a long wait we have finally obtained an imported copy of Sony Music’s new 30 track compilation album which was released to coincide with a Doris Day film season on America’s TCM network. We are pleased to say the package of stunning song material didn’t disappoint in any respect. Not only does it offer a much needed reminder of American music lovers of the significance of Doris Day’s contribution to popular music but it also showcases beautifully her versatility and natural flair as a song stylist.

What we are also still immensely charmed by is the set’s adorable front and back cover sleeve which we exclusively revealed to you in our March 2012 article. This is complimented further by some other stunning photo material of America’s top-selling female vocalist in Columbia’s recording studio. The additional “previously unpublished” shots were taken by the legendary Hollywood photographer Leo Fuchs (see our snap shot above of the set’s packaging and discs).

Our verdict is this is definitely a set which newbie fans and lovers of quality music should embrace with open arms as not only does it offer “excellent value for money” but it has been compiled with obvious love and care. Best of all the song list chosen by darling Doris Day – who is credited inside the set as its Executive Producer – truly sparkles from start to finish. David Foil also provides a charming introduction into Ms. Day’s music career.

If you haven’t yet added this set to your collection we encourage you to do as it towers above all other Doris Day music compilations released in recent memory!

Good job Sony Music Masterworks USA but we must urge you now to focus your attention on re-issuing Ms. Day entire catalogue of song on digital download (worldwide).

We are delighted to reveal the adorable front and back sleeve artwork to Sony Music’s upcoming Doris Day set – their first official American release in 13 years!

American fans are in for an absolute treat as they are getting a really cute double CD set released to coincide with Doris Day’s upcoming April 3rd birthday and a movie marathon which will take place throughout April on America’s TCM channel.

The new set entitled “With A Smile And A Song’ offers excellent value for money and crucially a stellar song selection chosen by darling Doris Day. Yes, the Grammy Award-Winning Singer was personally involved on the production of this project!

We have to say we think the new set towers above most Doris Day music compilations released in recent memory. Not only does it offer 30 must-have song choices but these are wrapped up in very nicely designed packaging. Oh and crucially the price of this double CD is not that dissimilar to the recent UK release ‘The Ultimate Collection‘.

What we were most impressed about was for once we get a compilation which uses a “previously unpublished” cover sleeve shot – the photo in question was notably taken by the acclaimed Hollywood photographer Leo Fuchs who snaps the singer at “work” in the recording studio. The rear sleeve then features another cheery publicity shot of Ms. Day from her 1960s film “Please Don’t Eat The Daisies” – one we know to be a big favourite of hers and ours too.

Overall we think Doris and Sony Music have done an excellent job at collaborating here. The double CD set retails for ONLY around $15USD and £12UKP on import so we encourage you all to order yours now!

We feel immensely privileged to be able to bring to you now an interview with Rock legend Bruce Johnston who is a member of The Beach Boys, an accomplished producer and solo artist, as well as a GRAMMY award-winning songwriter – best known for having penned “Disney Girls” and Barry Manilow’s #1 hit “I Write the Songs”. Johnston alongside his buddy Terry Melcher (Doris’ son) also produced the 1980s recordings which now feature on Doris Day’s new album “My Heart“. Well enough of the introductions we’ll let Bruce tell you all!

Thanks for very kindly agreeing to do this Q&A session for the ‘Discovering Doris’ website.

When/how did you first meet Doris’ son Terry Melcher? What are your memories of your early days working together?
Back in 1958, the independent record label owned by Doris Day and Marty Melcher (Arwin Records) released a top ten single by Jan & Arnie (my high school friends) and the song “Jennie Lee” went to number eight on the Billboard & Cash Box charts in the US. I thought that it might be a good idea to ‘see’ what was going on at Arwin Records and somehow I was able to audition an original song of mine for the head of A&R, Joe Lubin. I was fifteen years old at the time and I knew nothing about songwriting! Mr. Lubin turned my song down but encouraged me to keep on writing. Arwin Records was located in the same office complex in Beverly Hills as all the other Doris Day businesses and that’s where I met Terry Melcher. Terry and I became friends a year later.

During the mid-1980s Doris made a return to the recording studio. How did this come about and how did you become involved?
Terry and I were young record producers at Columbia Records in the very early sixties and we always seemed to work on music together for the rest of his life. Terry was able to interest Doris in recording a few songs and I ended up co-producing part of the “My Heart” album. Terry and I wrote three of the songs together (“My Heart”, “The Way I Dreamed It” and “Happy Endings”). The album also contains two of my songs that I wrote the words and music for: “Disney Girls” & “Heaven Tonight”.

You wrote a number of new “original” songs for this project. What inspired you when writing these and which out of all of them is your favourite?
Actually, knowing that Doris ‘might’ be recording again created an opportunity for Terry and me to finish some songs that we were ‘slowly’ working on. I really like our “My Heart” song and Terry and I wrote a lot of “My Heart” at Paul Francis Webster’s home two doors down from Terry’s mom’s house in Beverly Hills. [FYI: Doris was living in Carmel at that time and Paul Francis Webster had recently passed away.]

What was the preparation before rehearsals with Doris?
Usually Doris used to rehearse with Bill Miller before recording many of her great Columbia Records albums but I think Terry worked alone with Doris on the “My Heart” album songs before she recorded them. As Terry and I are the producers of what Doris was about to record, we worked out the correct song keys with Doris beforehand and then created the backing tracks.

Did Doris get involved with the actual creative process of this project i.e. with arrangements, song choices etc?
Luckily for Terry and me, Doris was deeply involved in all aspects of her “My Heart” album. Say no more!

What was it like working in the studio with Doris? Do you recall how long it took for Doris to complete her vocal work?
Because of knowing Terry all those years ago, I was able to be a young ‘fly on the wall’ at Doris Day sessions at Radio Recorders and Columbia Recorders and I was amazed at how prepared Doris was when the orchestra began playing in the studio for the run-through of the song(s) about to be recorded. Her seemingly effortless vocal recording was astounding and so natural sounding. When we recorded the “My Heart” songs, the vocals were recorded smoothly and quickly. Doris is such a pro!

What was the highlight for you of this entire project?
To know that Doris was pleased with the songs, the arrangements, and her recorded vocals.

Do you have any idea why the songs never got a “commercial” release during the 1980s?
I never thought about it other than someday these recordings would be released and shared with her worldwide fans.

As you will likely know this project is significant as it was Doris Day’s last to be completed as a recording artist. How do you feel knowing that your songs have now been given an “official” release by Sony Music UK?
I’m very proud to have contributed some of my songs to the legacy of such an important international recording artist.

In 1993, you were part of the “Doris Day Best Friends” charity event what was that experience like?
I really enjoyed watching Doris talking to her old friend, Les Brown, at the event. I only wish she could have sung one song with Les’s band (It was the Les Brown Band for the “Doris Day Best Friends” charity event). [See the above photo of Doris with Bruce taken from the 1993 event ]

Terry was a very talented man. How will you best remember him?
Terry was my best friend and he (along with Doris) encouraged me to write songs. I owe them my songwriting Grammy! Also, Terry always made me laugh a lot! Terry was a great record producer, songwriter, arranger, and he had a fantastic voice.

What did you think when you heard Doris was to get The Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award?
What an honor & well deserved…..Doris Day’s singing still stops me in my tracks!

Our readers would love to know what projects you are currently involved in. So please do tell us what does the future hold for Bruce Johnston?
As a very long time member of the Beach Boys, I still spend most of the year in concert worldwide but I do plan to put a great deal of focus on writing songs for television & movies over the next ten years.

Doris Day’s 29th original album features previously unreleased song material which she cut after a brief return to the recording studio during the mid-1980s.

Day’s late son Terry Melcher – who is best known internationally as the producer and songwriter for folk-rock pioneers The Byrds (“Mr. Tambourine Man”) – convinced his dear Mom to undertake these recording sessions under his guise. Six of the new songs contained on “My Heart” originate from these very sessions. Although a few of these recordings were aired during the eighties on Ms. Day’s American chat show, “Doris Day’s Best Friends“, the majority were left in an “unfinished” state until they were polished and perfected by the multi-platinum selling British producer Ted Carfrae who recorded additional orchestrations to complete the songs.

Doris remarks about her new songs: “I had to sing some modern songs…because I had already done all the old ones.”

Ms. Day was fully involved in the music selections for ‘My Heart’ which is notably her first original album for over 17 years (the last being “The Love Album“). As well as the eighties recordings there is also a studio recording taken from one of Day’s 1970s US TV specials plus a trio of other Doris Day classics lifted from the vaults at Columbia – each of these were hand picked by the star for sentimental reasons. The album is dedicated to the memory of Ms. Day’s son Terry Melcher.

Sad news broke just a few days ago that the pop maestro Mitch Miller died aged 99. The goateed American musician, singer, conductor, record producer, Artists and Repertoire man and record company executive passed away on Saturday, 31 July 2010 in a New York Hospital after a short illness.

Mitchell William “Mitch” Miller was born on the 4 July 1911 in Rochester (New York). He was a key record executive at Columbia Records during the 1950s and was responsible for launching the recording careers of many legendary singers such as Tony Bennett (“Rags to Riches”) and Rosemary Clooney (“Come on-a My House”). In 1955, at the height of Doris Day’s fame as a solo singer he also notably persuaded Ms. Day to extend her stay with the Columbia label after offering her an extremely lucrative new recording contract.

Miller is considered by many as one of the 20th century’s most influential forces in popular music. Between World War II and before the onset of the Beatles-led British Rock Invasion he literally re-invented the sound of popular music with his distinct style of catchy novelty record. Miller was a multi-million selling producer who had the Midas touch when it came to finding records which the public bought by the bucket load. When he became Columbia’s head of popular music in 1950, the label’s sales jumped 60 percent within 18 months making Columbia the most important pop music label of the decade.

Miller is also credited for having brought country music into the pop mainstream and for refashioning many international folk tunes into popular hits.

A generation of music lover will likely know Miller best for having invited them to “Sing Along With Mitch” on his hit American NBC television show of the early 1960s and through a series of “Sing-Along” long play records.

Now how would you like to own a new Doris Day album? Well it looks like that could well be a reality as a new album is said to be currently in production of previously unreleased material.

Word has it that Doris Day’s new long-play is to be named “My Heart” and will be issued now sometime in 2011 (delayed from autumn 2010) by her former record label Columbia/Sony Music (which was responsible for launching her solo music career in 1947).

To date, the multi-million selling songstress Doris Day has released a total of 28 original albums – these were all recorded during her pop chart heyday of the fifties and sixties. After this time, Ms. Day for all intent abandoned her singing career (as well as her movie career) for stardom on the small screen and eventually a life devoted to animal welfare work.

During the mid-eighties, Ms. Day did however make a brief return to the recording studio when her beloved son Terry Melcher convinced her to undertake a series of recording sessions under his guise. The songs contained on her upcoming album originate from these very sessions. Although a few of these recordings were aired on Ms. Day’s eighties chat show for cable television, “Doris Day’s Best Friends“, the majority were left in an “unfinished” state. That was until the powers that be had them polished and perfected by a new production team ensuring the inferior versions previously heard are completely eclipsed!

From what we understand, a track list is still being finalised so at present we can only speculate about what songs will end up on the finished release. What we will say is we hope to find on the new release the Ringo Starr hit ‘Octopus’s Garden’, Jonathan King’s ‘Everyone’s Gone To The Moon’ and Doris’s stunningly emotive vocal performance of the Joe Cocker classic “You Are So Beautiful To Me” which is an absolute tearjerker (and one which this site will cry a few tears over if it doesn’t get released!). We also have heard rumours of another gem possibly surfacing on the new album project as a bonus track and that is a demo record which Terry Melcher wrote and recorded for his Mother.

The murmurings of what is being planned don’t stop there as we understand that there may also be a new DVD to accompany the album release. If there is any truth in this we suspect that could contain some footage from “Doris Day’s Best Friends” show.

Our final words to you all are to be prepared for something a little different with album #29. The song choices and styling for this much delayed “comeback” record were contemporary for its time. In simple terms these eighties recordings are oceans apart from Ms. Day’s lushly orchestrated earlier works as they were engineered for a completely different music scene and era. What you can however rely upon are some stellar vocal performances and magical moments from the Queen of vocal phrasing and pitch perfect harmonies!

Before we sign off. It is important to highlight this new album release is also monumental because it will ultimately herald the end of one of the most successful recording careers in the history of popular music. Yes, that is right folks Doris Day ranks as one of the biggest selling female recording artists of the last century having seriously out-performed in sales terms many of her peers during her peak of the fifties!

This site promises to keep you posted on every bit of breaking news about this project. We do for now suggest you click here to read up on our previous feature detailing the “unreleased” recordings.

Inject instant Christmas cheer into your household with an album of the songs loved and associated most with the holiday season.

I am sure many of you will be asking, “What sets this Doris Day Christmas release apart from those previous?” In short, the 1997 American CD “Personal Christmas Collection” and the 2003 UK re-issue of “The Doris Day Christmas Album” only represent some and not all of Doris’s festive recordings. What you get here is a definitive collection of everything relating to this theme.

In 2003, I coordinated the before mentioned UK re-issue of Doris Day’s 1964 Christmas album. We did attempt to extend this release to become a “complete” collection but the powers that be prevented that from happening. Where my past attempt failed, the American golden oldie re-issuer Collectors’ Choice Music, succeeds. To start off with their packaging sparkles with the most divine “Christmas” themed promotional shots taken from Doris’s movies. They also feature the original sleeve artwork for Doris’s 1964 LP which incidentally opens the collection (tracks 1-12). Doris even extends her personal greetings to you all through a rare 1969 audio recording (made at the same time as her voice-over promos for her TV sitcom). I really do give credit to this label for putting such an obvious amount of thought and care into this project, especially when CD sales are on a downturn.

The “Complete Christmas Collection” will be available to order through Collectors’ Choice Music from the 1 November 2008 but will go on general release from the 25 November 2008.

Doris Day’s 1963 album with the late and great American entertainer Robert Goulet is to receive its first American CD issue.

An out-of-print Doris Day album is being re-issued with its original artwork on 4 March 2008 by US independent label DRG Records. This is the first time this album has been given a CD release stateside as previously it had only been available in Germany, Japan and Australia. The new CD is available to order now from online retailers amazon.com and amazon.co.uk.

For those who do not know the musical Annie Get Your Gun is loosely based on the life of American sharpshooter Annie Oakley (1860-1926). It was songwriter Jerome Kern who was originally tasked with the job of writing the music for the stage production. The project was however passed to Irving Berlin after Kern unexpectedly died. In 1946, the show opened to glowing reviews on both sides of the Atlantic. A few years later Metro Goldwyn Mayer (MGM) adapted the show for the big-screen. The film version starred actress Betty Hutton and became one of the most successful musical-movies of the 1950s. A decade later, it was Doris’s turn to record an all-new cast recording at Columbia studios. This version of the classic score was made with the late and great entertainer Robert Goulet. Goulet and Day laid their vocals separately with Day completing her contribution on the 8 October 1962. The orchestra was conducted by Franz Allers and most probably overdubbed in New York.

[ FAST FACT: I Got The Sun In The Mornin' is actually one of Doris's most recorded tunes. She cut no less than 3 versions of it: her first with Les Brown in 1946, then for her LP Show Time and finally for this album. ]

In 2007, Sony BMG (UK) released this TV-advertised CD with a DVD of Doris’s first televised music special. On its first week of release the CD charted at #20 on the UK album charts (its highest position). The Magic of Doris Day features a nice mixture of international hit singles and essential album recordings from the vaults at Columbia. The real bonus for collectors is the inclusion of two songs that make their CD debut. This includes a song medley that opened Doris’s 1971 special and her heartfelt rendition of Streisand’s “The Way We Were” which she taped live on her final 1975 special. Both gems were recorded after Doris had departed Columbia and embarked on a successful career in television. If there is one criticism of this project that would be the absence of any actual photographs as the packaging relies solely on cartoon drawings. On 14 April 2007, the CD was released in Australia to coincide with a Mother’s Day promotional campaign. It peaked in mid-May at #22 on the Australian charts.
