Doris Day’s 29th original album features previously unreleased song material which she cut after a brief return to the recording studio during the mid-1980s.

Day’s late son Terry Melcher – who is best known internationally as the producer and songwriter for folk-rock pioneers The Byrds (“Mr. Tambourine Man”) – convinced his dear Mom to undertake these recording sessions under his guise. Six of the new songs contained on “My Heart” originate from these very sessions. Although a few of these recordings were aired during the eighties on Ms. Day’s American chat show, “Doris Day’s Best Friends“, the majority were left in an “unfinished” state until they were polished and perfected by the multi-platinum selling British producer Ted Carfrae who recorded additional orchestrations to complete the songs.

Doris remarks about her new songs: “I had to sing some modern songs…because I had already done all the old ones.”

Ms. Day was fully involved in the music selections for ‘My Heart’ which is notably her first original album for over 17 years (the last being “The Love Album“). As well as the eighties recordings there is also a studio recording taken from one of Day’s 1970s US TV specials plus a trio of other Doris Day classics lifted from the vaults at Columbia – each of these were hand picked by the star for sentimental reasons. The album is dedicated to the memory of Ms. Day’s son Terry Melcher.

The British division of the recording giant Sony Music has today unveiled to this site the full release details for Doris Day’s new album of original song material.

The stunning new collection of songs is entitled “MY HEART” and will be released in the United Kingdom on Compact Disc format on the 5 September 2011. A digital-download edition will also be available in the UK only. Fans are encouraged to support its release now by placing an advance order for the album via amazon.co.uk.

In June 2010, we reported how Ms Day’s new album will feature “previously unreleased” songs which she cut after a brief return to the recording studio during the mid-1980s. Although a few of these recordings were aired on Ms. Day’s eighties chat show for cable television, “Doris Day’s Best Friends“, the majority were left in an “unfinished” state until they were polished and perfected by an all-new production team.

Ms. Day was fully involved in the music selections for her new release which is notably her first for over 17 years to actually feature new studio recordings (the last being “The Love Album“). As well as the eighties recordings which we know you are going to absolutely adore there is also a studio recording which was cut for one of Day’s 1970s US TV specials plus a trio of other DD classics from the vaults at Columbia.

The album’s full track listing is now exclusively revealed below. As you will see five of the new songs were co-written by Terry and Beach Boys member Bruce Johnston: these include the dreamy title track ‘My Heart’, the romantic ‘Way I Dreamed It, the Beach Boy hit ‘Disney Girls’, the haunting ‘Happy Endings’ – sung by Terry (with a newly recorded spoken-word introduction by Day for her fans) – and the catchy ‘Heaven Tonight’ which we understand from Sony Music will be Day’s lead single for British radio (no physical or download release is planned!).

Also on the set list are three classic rock-era favourites: the Lovin’ Spoonful’s joyful 1966 hit ‘Daydream’, The Beach Boys’ nostalgic ‘Disney Girls’ (written by Bruce Johnston, who co-produced various recordings on “MY HEART”) and what is for us the absolute highlight of this entire project Day’s outstanding rendition of Joe Cocker’s ballad ‘You Are So Beautiful’. The other gem to receive its first official music release is Day’s delightful rendition of Streisand’s ‘Hurry!, It’s Lovely Up Here’ (from the musical ‘On A Clear Day You Can See Forever’) – Day’s version was recorded especially for her 1971 TV special “The Doris Mary Anne Kappelhoff Special”.

Doris remarks about her new songs:

“I had to sing some modern songs…because I had already done all the old ones.”

Now we have to admit we did hope for more of the long-lost eighties recordings but thankfully there are enough present to make the wait very, very worthwhile. We must say though we were a wee bit surprised to see some old classics creeping into the track list of what is primarily an album of new material. These additions were however hand-picked by Ms. Day for sentimental reasons and boy does she pick some good tunes from her back catalogue, these include ‘Ohio’ (from the 1960 LP “Show Time“), ‘Life Is Just A Bowl Of Cherries’ (from the 1994 LP “The Love Album“), ‘My One And Only Love’ (from the 1962 LP “Duet” with Andre Previn) and ‘My Buddy’ (from the 1951 LP “I’ll See You In My Dreams“) – the latter track Ms. Day included as a dedication to her beloved son Terry, who died of melanoma in 2004.

No sleeve artwork has yet been released as this is still awaiting final approval. Also as yet there is still NO American release confirmed for this album. We can only therefore encourage fans overseas to offer their FULL support to the British release which we fully believe deserves a place in the British ‘Top 20′ chart.

Remember every purchase you make of the CD at amazon.co.uk helps make it a UK hit!

This is the second CD instalment of Doris’s radio shows from the early 1950s, courtesy of the British music label, Zone Records. Volume 2 indulges us to many more magical moments from Doris’s time on American radio station CBS. As per the first volume, the new CD set contains a total of four full-length shows. These have nothing edited out, therefore giving today’s listener the same experience to that of its original audience. The recording techniques of the time do have some flaws but have been painstakingly restored to ensure that they sound as crisp and as clear as is possible (taking into account these limitations). This series of CDs offers Doris Day collectors a golden opportunity to own star-studded duets and other solo performances of songs which are not available anywhere else. My favourite rarities on this latest release are the pretty duets with American singer and actor Gordon MacRae. Having just played both CDs from start to finish I am pleased to tell you all that Zone Records have delivered yet another 1st class product. The set is comprised of two full colour picture disc CDs as well as an 8-page booklet of detailed liner notes and rare photographs.

The Recording Academy® is to honour Doris Day in 2008 with a long overdue and much deserved Lifetime Achievement Award.

The songstress that we all know and love shot to fame in the 1940s as a sultry big-band vocalist and by the end of the decade had become a Hollywood movie star. It was however in the 1950s that Doris Day “The Singer” became one of the most successful female solo recording artists of all-time. Her singing & film career then continued with gusto until the late 1960s.

Doris Day’s legacy of song comprises of over 600 recordings. She also released 29 studio albums and charted more than 76 singles on the American Billboard (these include million-sellers: “Sentimental Journey” (1945) “Love Somebody” (1948), “It’s Magic” (1948), “A Guy Is A Guy” (1952), “Secret Love” (1954) and “Que Sera, Sera”). In the late 1990s, her recordings of “Sentimental Journey” and “Secret Love” were inducted into the GRAMMY Hall of Fame.
It is the fore-mentioned outstanding contribution to popular music that is now to be acknowledged at the 50th GRAMMY Awards. The ceremony will take place in Los Angeles on the 10 February 2008. Other recipients of this award are Burt Bacharach (composer), The Band (rock band), Cab Calloway (jazz singer), Itzhak Perlman (violinist), Max Roach (drummer/composer) and Earl Scruggs (banjo player).

“These profoundly inspiring figures are being honoured as legendary performers, creative architects and technical visionaries. Their outstanding accomplishments and passion for their craft have created a timeless legacy.” – President/CEO of The Recording Academy.

Although not yet officially confirmed it is not expected that Ms. Day will likely be able to attend the ceremony. Also please be aware that the actual televised show is usually edited and does not of norm include the Lifetime Achievement Awards.

The Recording Academy® was established in 1957 and is internationally known for the GRAMMY Awards. These prestigious awards are given for musical excellence and are the most credible brand in the music industry. Most notably the recipients are decided by the respected and accomplished musicians, producers, engineers and recording professionals that form part of this organisation.

*** Stop Press: The Grammy Museum will open 8 December 2008. Doris will be nicely featured in the Lifetime achievement Section and also the Hall of Fame for her two winning songs. ***

During the mid-1980s, Doris Day returned to a recording studio for the first time in over a decade to do a project that was driven by her son Terry Melcher, along with his buddy Bruce Johnston (Terry’s former music partner in the early ’60s and a long-time member of The Beach Boys). The big drive was to create some songs that could feature on the soundtrack of Doris’s 1985-86 cable TV show, “Doris Day’s Best Friends“.

In Monterey (California), Doris laid vocals to a selection of some new songs written by Terry, as well as several pop classics, including many with lyrics pertaining to animals, giving the material a tie-in with the TV series content. Doris did not actually perform any of these songs on camera for the show but rather the recordings were played over a variety of scenes featuring animals and Doris.

At the time, there was also the expectation that Doris would record further songs so that a selection of appropriate tunes could be pulled together for what would have been her first all-new album release in 20 years (her 1967 Love Album had yet to be released). Unfortunately, this idea was never fully executed although some very lovely, worthwhile songs were committed to tape. One such song, “My Heart”, remained unheard until 1991, when it debuted over the closing credits of the 1991 PBS documentary, Doris Day – A Sentimental Journey.

The versions of these 1980s recordings which were aired were produced on a relatively low budget for television exhibition, a few suffered from the now dated sounding synthesizers that were commonly used at the time. Terry Melcher had however mentioned he hoped to go back and replace some of those make shift backing tracks with richer sounds from a real and fuller array of real instruments. Sadly, he passed away before this became a reality.

The recordings listed below have taken on quite a mythical status among Doris Day devotees as excluding Doris’s various live performances given for radio (including her own show) these are now the only ones yet to be released commercially. There is still hope that some day they will emerge from the vaults as Doris’ vocals are truly impeccable (standout tracks are “Disney Girls”, “Everyone’s Gone To The Moon”, “My Heart” and “You Are So Beautiful To Me”).

Doris and guest star John Denver sing their hearts out in Doris’s 1975 variety-entertainment special “Doris Day Today”.

Many of you were eagerly counting down the days to the 20 November 2007 as it was the grand occasion that Doris’s only remaining TV special came to DVD format in the USA. It was also that very same day that the final DVD box of Doris’s cheery sitcom was released featuring ALL-NEW commentary from dear Doris. What an absolute joy!

For me “Doris Day Today” has always held a special place in my heart as it was Doris’s last major-league production that she made before exiting Hollywood for the quiet surroundings of Carmel. In essence this was the star’s fond farewell to her singing and acting career of the last 30+ years.

It was 10 years ago, that I first had a glimpse of this show on a poor quality “bootleg” VHS tape. This however didn’t dampen the experience of seeing all the fun comedy sketches and magical musical performances. Doris’s included renditions of “The Way We Were” and “Day by Day” were and still are for me simply breathtaking. Also Doris’s fashions, compared to her 1971 special, seem to age better over time as she still looks very contemporary. All of these pluses are then multiplied by ten when country-legend John Denver makes his guest appearance. John is the epitome of everything that is so wonderful about Doris as he too exuded happiness, warmth and charm. The pair together perform some very harmonious duets are simply stunning!

There’s no doubt that the 2007 DVD of this bright and cheery spectacular is alone worth every cent of its purchase price. The fact it is impeccably remastered and comes with a generous helping of bonus materials ensures it claims the title as one of the “Best releases of 2007″.

STOP PRESS: The good news for European fans is Sony BMG (UK) have exclusively licensed this DVD for release in the United Kingdom. The British edition released on the 21 April 2008 comes in digipak packaging with slightly different/adapted artwork. It does however still contains all the same wonderful footage as its American cousin.

There are very few CD releases that I greet with genuine interest as over the last 10 year all of Doris’s studio-recorded work has been released in this format. This CD set however from Zone Records (UK) offers something new. It instead turns the spotlight on another important part of Doris’s career which was her time on radio. It was between 1952-3 that the actress and singer was given her own variety entertainment spot on American radio station CBS (aka The Doris Day Show). Each episode recorded in Hollywood would be full of comedic banter and general chit-chat between Doris and some of her movie and music co-stars (e.g. Kirk Douglas, Ronald Reagan, Howard Keel, Frankie Laine and Guy Mitchell). It would also offer the star a perfect vehicle to perform many of her single releases, tunes from her motion pictures and other songs that she adored but simply did not get to record in the studio. The first of these shows to receive a digital makeover originate from April and May 1952. Zone Records include in their first volume four consecutive episodes from this period. Each show remains unedited and as it was originally broadcast to audiences some 50 years ago (i.e. with introductions and commercials intact). As touched on before what is significant about this series and indeed the first volume is there are songs which Doris did not get to record for her record label Columbia. In fact due to contractual reasons Columbia did not allow Doris to cut studio recordings with many of her movie co-stars as they were signed to rival labels. It is therefore a great joy to hear in the first release collaborations with people such as the adorable Gordon MacRae. Other guests who appear in this set include Ray Bolger (April in Paris), songwriters Frank Loesser (“If I Were A Bell” & “Baby It’s Cold Outside”), Marais & Miranda (“Ma Says Pa Says”) and Donald O’Connor (“Singing In The Rain”). Although the recording techniques of the time do show some flaws this is compensated by the overall time and care that has gone into this project (i.e. the sumptuous packaging that features rare photographs, detailed song information, liner notes and 2 picture discs). It truly is a shame that some of the major labels out there can not learn from the standards set by this independent record label. My advice is don’t miss out on this nostalgic trip back in time!

In 2007, Sony BMG (UK) released this TV-advertised CD with a DVD of Doris’s first televised music special. On its first week of release the CD charted at #20 on the UK album charts (its highest position). The Magic of Doris Day features a nice mixture of international hit singles and essential album recordings from the vaults at Columbia. The real bonus for collectors is the inclusion of two songs that make their CD debut. This includes a song medley that opened Doris’s 1971 special and her heartfelt rendition of Streisand’s “The Way We Were” which she taped live on her final 1975 special. Both gems were recorded after Doris had departed Columbia and embarked on a successful career in television. If there is one criticism of this project that would be the absence of any actual photographs as the packaging relies solely on cartoon drawings. On 14 April 2007, the CD was released in Australia to coincide with a Mother’s Day promotional campaign. It peaked in mid-May at #22 on the Australian charts.

Conductor: Various
Label: Sony BMG (UK)
Format: Audio CD (#88697055812)
Highest Chart Position: UK#20 / Australia#22

This CD collection is quite a unique release as it is themed around an obscure American EP ‘April In Paris’, the readily available album ‘Young At Heart’ and some other hard to find movie favourites. The selling points for fans though will be the inclusion of all the studio recordings Doris cut of songs from her early 1950s musical-movies West Point Story, Lucky Me and April In Paris.

Conductor: Various
Label: Collectables Records (USA)
Format: Audio CD

This 3CD set issued to celebrate Doris Day’s 80th birthday has to rate as one of the most unique and memorable releases from the Sony Music group. It was also a project that I had the pleasure to coordinate. Containing three “themed” CDs it features 60 original recordings that have been digitally remastered. The set also provides a beautiful overview of 26 years of hit singles and album recordings (1940-66) as well as including track-rarities, alternate-takes, a full Columbia LP discography, track-by-track notes and a mini biography.

If that was not enough to wet your appetite, specially obtained celebrity anecdotes appear from Burt Bacharach, Michael Feinstein, Robert Goulet, Frankie Laine, Sir Paul McCartney, Johnny Mathis, Anne Murray, Olivia Newton-John, Cybill Shepherd and Andy Williams. The proverbial icing on the “birthday” cake was the contribution of a special message from Doris Day which she wanted her fans to read.

Upon its release this 3CD set received critical acclaim from various disc jockeys on British radio station BBC Radio 1.
This truly is Doris Day’s “…Life in Music”
