This is the true story about the life of torch singer
Ruth Etting and her evil-tempered husband Martin Snyder [the man who
orchestrated Etting's climb to stardom]. This dramatic film focuses on her troubled relationship with
the feared gangster Snyder. A relationship that turned her offstage
life into a nightmare of violence and terror!
To say this
was a gritty departure from previous "Doris Day" movie roles would be an
understatement. Day's role was praised by the critics and this
dramatically charged picture received an impressive six
Oscar nominations that included Best Actor (James Cagney), Best Song
(I'll Never Stop Loving You), Best Motion Picture Story
and Best Screenplay.
Day's movie soundtrack album also became her
most successful LP staying on the American Billboard
chart for a staggering 28 weeks!
