This is the true story of torch singer Ruth Etting and her evil-tempered husband Martin Snyder who orchestrated her climb to stardom. This dramatic film focuses on Etting's troubled relationship with Snyder who, as well as being a feared gangster, turned her offstage life into a nightmare of violence and terror!

To say the least this was a gritty departure from previous Doris Day roles but rewardingly became a critical success with no less than six Oscar nominations including Best Actor (James Cagney), Best Song (I'll Never Stop Loving You), Best Motion Picture Story and Best Screenplay.
