Young actress Melinda Howard has just returned to New York from touring in England. She decides to surprise her mother, whom she thinks is a successful Broadway star with a mansion in Manhattan. Unfortunately, life is not so straightforward, as her mother is actually a burnt-out cabaret singer with a love for whisky. Melinda also becomes involved with two very different men. Tom Farnham, a famous dancer/singer who falls in love with her and Adolph Hubbell, an aging, married millionaire whose friendship leads to zany  complications with his wife.

Songs featured are Somebody Loves Me, Just One of Those Things and the title tune.
