Some critics may have
unfairly dismissed this as a copycat of Meet Me in St.
Louis but in my opinion the characters and script are much
more enduring based on Booth Tarkington's 'Penrod' stories. The
triumphant popularity of the movie led to a 1953 sequel By the Light of the Silvery
Moon. This
really is an enchanting, wholesome movie. It follows what are
the very animated lives of the Winfield family, who in the movie have
just relocated to a small town in Indiana. Doris plays Marjorie
Winfield, the tomboy daughter, who is more at home on the baseball
pitch than in a dress. This somewhat begins to change on
the arrival of
William Sherman (the boy next door). Unfortunately, William has some
rather unconventional ideas for the era which is set during World
War I. This
includes not believing in marriage or money which causes friction with
Marjorie's father, who is the local bank vice president. Songs featured are
Till We Meet Again and the title tune. |
