Fans around
the world tuned in to hear a bright and cheery Doris Day chat
away with disc jockeys live on Magic 63 AM radio...
As many of you
out there will know our Doris celebrated her 84th birthday on
the 3 April 2008. To the delight of over 2 million listeners around the world dear
Doris continued her annual tradition of talking
to disc jockeys live on her local radio station Magic 63 AM. Fans tuned in to
the Monterey (California) based station for a fabulous day
of non-stop Doris Day music and two rare opportunities to hear
the elusive star talk live on air. The birthday girl
joined DJ Ed Dickinson around 11.30am and had a farewell chat with DJ Kevin Kahl
around 3pm.
Doris sounded very much the same person we have all
come to adore. She was cheery and candidly
chatted away to both DJs as well as a visiting film crew from
Germany who were making a documentary about her life for TV station
ARTE tv. As ever the star
wore her heart on her sleeve and amongst the very upbeat
chit-chat there were a few moments when she teared-up whilst acknowledging the tributes of love and support
from fans that had been aired on the station throughout the day.
"I'm
sending my love and hellos to everyone listening in. I wish I
knew them all and could meet them all and I just think it's
great and appreciate it so much...I really do" - Doris Day
Doris also
professed how she had been deeply touched by
the kindness of one particular fan named Barb McFadden who had organised
for her birthday the making of an 8' x 8' friendship quilt. The
hand-made quilt was adorned with 456 personalised messages from fans in 17 countries
and 27 US states. Barb's aim was to do something for her idol
that would include a lot of people and show the star just how
much she meant to them. Judging by Doris's reaction on air Barb
certainly accomplished this!
Barb's friendship quilt...

"Since I've been quilting over 30 years, I decided on a signature quilt. With Doris' likes and interests in mind, I scoured the local fabric shops for the right material. I looked at daises, but settled on paw prints. I started out with cats and dogs and a dog bone, then added birds as appliqué shapes that people would sign their name and message on. I had local help and support from TJ, my son's friend and a computer tech, my friend Tresa, who help me with a lot of aspects of the quilt and of course Miss Kitty, she supervised each step and tested out every square of the quilt. I had a tremendous amount of help from Anne and Ed Dickinson who were a local contact for me in California and helped gather signatures and made arrangements for the quilt to reach Doris..." - Barb McFadden

Doris's two calls reassured all that she is indeed well and happy
with life proving those recent mischievous stories
in the tabloids to be nothing more than headline grabbing
fiction. Even
after the tragic loss around Christmas of a series of her
beloved animals she has yet again bounced back from some sad
times in glorious fashion. So do take note fans and journalists
alike that
Doris Day continues to enjoy her life in Carmel
surrounded by good friends as well as a great team
of staff and of course her darling four-legged
friends!
Doris we love you
and thank you for sharing your special day with us all as it really
was as special for us as it was so obviously for you.
