Day sings the songs of Irving Berlin's musical Annie Get Your Gun...
by Stephen M (Last updated: 15 April 2008, 12:19)

Doris's 1963 album with the late and great American entertainer Robert Goulet is to receive its first US CD issues...

An out-of-print Doris Day album is being re-issued with its original artwork on 4 March 2008 by US independent label DRG Records. This is the first time this album has been given a CD release stateside as previously it had only been available in Germany, Japan and Australia. The new CD is available to order now from online retailers amazon.com, HMV.co.uk and amazon.co.uk.

For those who do not know the musical Annie Get Your Gun is loosely based on the life of American sharpshooter Annie Oakley (1860-1926). It was songwriter Jerome Kern who was originally tasked with the job of writing the music for the stage production.

The project was however passed to Irving Berlin after Kern unexpectedly died. In 1946, the show opened to glowing reviews on both sides of the Atlantic. A few years later Metro Goldwyn Mayer (MGM) adapted the show for the big-screen. The film version starred actress Betty Hutton and became one of the most successful musical-movies of the 1950s. A decade later, it was Doris's turn to record an all-new cast recording at Columbia studios. This version of the classic score was of course made with the late and great entertainer Robert Goulet.

Goulet and Day laid their vocals separately with Doris completing her contribution on the 8 Oct 1962. The orchestra was conducted by Franz Allers and most probably overdubbed in New York.

[ FAST FACT: I Got The Sun In The Mornin' is actually one of Doris's most recorded tunes. She cut no less than 3 versions of it: her first with Les Brown in 1946, then for her LP Show Time and finally here. ]

Cover artwork to Doris's 1963 album "Annie Get Your Gun"

Well I just got my hands on the 2008 CD re-issue of this classic 1960s studio album and you know what I am a happy chap. Although various international CD versions have previously been available, this US issue definitely has the edge with gleaming, restored sleeve artwork and a rather informative booklet. Contained within is a nice Q&A interview with the former head of the Columbia "Masterworks" label, Schuyler Chapin. Chapin was responsible for commissioning many acclaimed cast albums that graced this division of Columbia Records. So, it is interesting to learn how things all came about with this 1963 release starring Goulet and Day.

It is also apt that of all the labels out there that could have  taken up the gauntlet to resurrect this album it would be one that has such respected credentials in the world of Broadway and soundtrack album re-issues. What a truly great CD and welcome reminder of what a strong performer Goulet was!
