Day the reluctant star by French-born author
David Bret... by Stephen M
(Last updated: 04 April 2008, 09:00)
Prepare for a big case of deja vu (or
DAY-ja vu) as this
site reveals details of another Day biography...
Are you ready to become a tad confused? Well it
has just come to light that another renown
writer has been busy working on his definitive
Day biography. He too is called David and will
be publishing his book also this summer. This
alternate biography even shares the same
cover photography as the rival release by
American author
David Kaufman.
The
French-born author David Bret currently
lives in the North of England and is one of
Europe's leading celebrity biographers having published 19 best-selling biographies on
many of the biggest and best-loved stars from
the showbiz world, such as Rock Hudson, Clark
Gable, Maria Callas, George Formby, Errol Flynn,
Gracie Fields, Freddie Mercury, Joan Crawford,
Morrissey and most notably he is a definitive
resource on the French singer Edith Piaf (having
published two books).
Mr. Bret
proclaims to have had a diverse circle of admirers, friends and
acquaintances (past and present) from Marlene Dietrich, Peggy Lee, Elaine Paige,
Montserrat Caballe, Kirsty McColl, Greta Garbo
to H M the Queen Mother to name but a few. He
openly professes to be a fierce and vociferous
opponent of racism, anti-Semitism and gay
prejudice. His past books have on occasions
provoked controversy by the nature of the claims
and revelations
that they have made, examples being Rock Hudson did not contract AIDS by way of
sex but by way of a blood transfusion, George
Formby's womanising ways, Gracie Fields'
extra-marital affairs, Maria Callas's yen for
gay lovers welcoming the challenge of attempting
to turn them straight etc.
Doris
Day: Reluctant Star is due out in the UK
during July 2008. It is being released by the
London-based publisher JR Books Ltd which
publishes across a wide range of subjects,
including the arts, history, biography, fiction,
humour, lifestyle and sport - it also has signed
to it a number of high profile authors.
At present very little
information is in the public domain about this
upcoming release. One thing is however assured that the book
will be immensely reverential towards the star but much
like Mr. Kaufman's project promises to lift the lid on the real
person behind the archetypal "girl-next-door" portrayed in her
movies. Stay tuned...

How/when
did you first discover Doris Day?
I remember her
television show as a kid in the 1970s and seeing her
last movie in the theatres.
David Bret has always been a huge fan
of Doris Day, ever since seeing her in Please Don't Eat
The Daisies.
He began working on the book around five years ago.
It is different from other books in that it is written
in good, univeristy degree quality English,
and in Bret's uniqely controversial, takes-no-prisoners
style for which he is known.
Very extensive research. Doris Day has been in touch, as
has Elizabeth Taylor, whose
biographt Bret has written--to come out after her death.
Quote: "I've read his books, and David Bret appears to
be a writer with a soul." Doris Day
Quote, "David Bret is a shit, but a loveable shit!"
Elizabeth Taylor
Quote, "You always write what is in your heart, That's
why our friendship means so much to
me." Marlene Dietrich.
David Bret has now published 20
best-selling biographies and would be suggested as a far
better authority on Doris Day than any contemporary/fan.
Sincere
thanks to Jim Pierson for taking the time to do this
Q&A interview (conducted by Stephen M).
